France, thirteen-time winners of the championship

France's national rugby union team, known as Les Bleus (the Blues) or the France XV, are one of the historic powers of the international game. Founder members of the Five Nations in 1910 (with several political interruptions, becoming a regular participant again from 1947 onwards), France have won the championship on thirteen occasions, including their eleventh title in 2022, sealed with a memorable Grand Slam.

France are one of the most recognisable sides in world rugby: the navy blue shirt with the golden cockerel, the attacking style often described as "French flair", landmark generations from Jean-Pierre Rives to Serge Blanco and through to Fabien Galthié and Antoine Dupont, and the long-running rivalry with England that defines "Le Crunch".

In 2027 Les Bleus will tackle the championship with a dual ambition: chasing another European title, and preparing for the Rugby World Cup in Australia, which kicks off eight months later, from 1 October to 13 November 2027. The Six Nations will be both a competition in its own right and a major continental dress rehearsal.

The Stade de France, home of Les Bleus

The Stade de France, in Saint-Denis on the northern outskirts of Paris, has been the France team's official home venue since opening in 1998. With a capacity of 81,338, it is one of the largest stadiums in Europe and one of the biggest rugby venues in the world. Built for the 1998 FIFA World Cup, it also stages concerts, football fixtures and Rugby World Cup finals (2007, 2023). Two Six Nations 2027 matches are scheduled here: France v Wales on 6 February and France v Scotland on 21 February.

A nation with 13 titles

France's record in the championship is rich. Members of the Five Nations from 1910 (with several interruptions caused by political disputes with the British unions), France lifted their first solo title in 1959. The 1970s saw the team of Jacques Fouroux and Jean-Pierre Rives establish themselves as a great rugby nation, picking up several Grand Slams (1968, 1977, 1981).

The 1990s and 2000s were also glorious: Grand Slams in 1997, 1998 (Bernard Laporte's side), 2002, 2004 and 2010. More recently, in 2022, Fabien Galthié's group, led by Antoine Dupont and Romain Ntamack, sealed a Grand Slam that left its mark. In total, France count 13 titles and 10 Grand Slams.

"French flair"

"French flair" is the phrase commonly used to describe France's playing style: a flamboyant, creative brand of rugby, built on instinct and risk-taking. The image, shaped in part by the Blanco-Sella generation of the 1980s and revived by the Galthié-Dupont sides, is woven into French rugby identity on the world stage. In 2027 Les Bleus will look to open a new chapter after the disappointment of Rugby World Cup 2023, building a side capable of chasing the global crown.

Historic rivalries

France carry strong rivalries with England ("Le Crunch"), with Ireland (often decisive in recent campaigns) and with Scotland (Auld Alliance Trophy). The Latin derby against Italy has gained weight in recent years as the Azzurri have improved. France and Wales share a long tradition of open, attacking rugby.

How to buy tickets for France matches

Tickets for France home matches at the Stade de France (France v Wales on 6 February and France v Scotland on 21 February) are distributed by the French Rugby Federation (FFR). Sales are usually rolled out in phases:

  • Priority window: for FFR licence-holders, partners and clubs.
  • General public sale: opens in autumn 2026, several months before the matches.
  • Official platforms: ffr.fr (ticketing section) and the official sixnationsrugby.com site.

For away matches (England at Twickenham, Italy in Rome, Ireland in Dublin), tickets are sold by the host unions: RFU for England, FIR for Italy, IRFU for Ireland. Expect to pay several hundred pounds/euros for the best seats at the marquee fixtures (notably Le Crunch and Ireland v France); general public seats are typically £50-£200.

Tips to avoid scams
