Full Ireland fixtures for the Guinness Six Nations 2027: three home matches at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin (vs England, vs Scotland, vs France) and two away trips to Rome and Cardiff.
The Ireland national rugby team, governed by the Irish Rugby Football Union (IRFU), has been one of the form sides in international rugby in recent years. A founder member of the championship (1883), Ireland have won 15 titles (Five and Six Nations combined) and four Grand Slams. Across 2014-2024 they piled up impressive dominance: Grand Slams in 2018 and 2023, multiple back-to-back titles and a sustained spell at or near the top of the World Rugby rankings.
A unique feature of the side is that it represents the entire island of Ireland (Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland), a political setup unmatched in international rugby. Players from Northern Ireland (part of the United Kingdom) line up alongside team-mates from the Republic under the four-provinces flag (Connacht, Leinster, Munster, Ulster), with a rugby-specific anthem ("Ireland's Call") sung alongside the Republic's national anthem ("Amhrรกn na bhFiann") at home games in Dublin.
The Aviva Stadium, located in Dublin on the historic Lansdowne Road site, is Ireland's national stadium. Rebuilt in 2010 (the previous ground dated from 1872, making it the oldest rugby-dedicated stadium in the world), it has a capacity of 51,700 โ modest compared with its British counterparts but renowned for a unique atmosphere. Lansdowne Road, beside the sea in the Ballsbridge district, is one of the toughest venues in world rugby: Ireland have been near-unbeatable there for several years, with home supporters carrying their players with infectious passion.
Ireland were long viewed as a "mid-table" nation in the championship, capable of stunning one-off performances without ever dominating. The turning point came in the 2000s with an exceptional generation (Brian O'Driscoll, Paul O'Connell, Ronan O'Gara) who delivered a first Grand Slam in 2009. But it is across 2018-2024 that Ireland have asserted themselves as the dominant team in the northern hemisphere: Grand Slam 2018, titles in 2014, 2015, 2018, 2023 and 2024.
Under Andy Farrell (head coach since 2019), the team even rose to world number one in the World Rugby rankings, hitting a level of consistency unseen in Irish rugby history. The lingering frustration remains a Rugby World Cup still to be won, with Ireland yet to progress beyond the quarter-finals in any of their eight World Cup appearances. Rugby World Cup 2027 will therefore be a huge milestone for this generation.
