The historic showpiece of European rugby

The Six Nations Championship is the oldest international rugby competition in the world, with origins dating back to 1883. The 2027 edition is particularly significant as it falls in a Rugby World Cup year, and is expected to carry an extra edge: the six nations will be fine-tuning their squads both for this tournament and for the World Cup knockout phase in Australia just months later.

The format remains classic: five rounds, fifteen matches in total, played as a single round-robin. Each team faces the other five once, with either two or three home fixtures depending on the year. For 2027, England host Italy and Scotland at Twickenham, Wales (vs Ireland and England) and Ireland (vs England and France) anchor the home rotations, and standard pairings apply. The Calcutta Cup, contested between England and Scotland, is traditionally staged on the final round at Twickenham.

Format and schedule

Matches are spread across five weekends between February and March. Three fixtures per round, barring exceptional cases. Round 5 (Saturday 13 March 2027) is traditionally known as "Super Saturday": all three closing matches are played on the same day, with staggered kick-off times so supporters can follow every minute. The Grand Slam scenario โ€” where a team wins all five matches โ€” often goes right down to the wire on Super Saturday.

Beyond the title, a wealth of historic silverware

Alongside the Six Nations Championship Trophy awarded to the overall winner, several secondary trophies bring extra spice to the tournament. The Grand Slam (winning all five matches) remains the ultimate prize, followed by the Triple Crown, reserved for the home unions (England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland) when one of them beats the other three.

The Calcutta Cup, one of rugby's oldest trophies (first contested in 1879), is fought out between England and Scotland every year. In 2027, this fixture takes place in Round 5 (Super Saturday) on Saturday 13 March at Twickenham. The Championship also includes the Auld Alliance Trophy (France v Scotland), the Centenary Quaich (Scotland v Ireland), the Millennium Trophy (England v Ireland) and the Cuttitta Cup (Italy v Scotland).

The tournament also awards the Wooden Spoon to the team finishing bottom without a single win. And the closing fixture at Lansdowne Road (Aviva Stadium) on Super Saturday 2027 between Ireland and France could well prove decisive for the title, in a season where both sides will likely be in the running for the championship.

The most common questions about the Six Nations 2027

The Championship begins on Friday 5 February 2027 at 20:10 GMT with Ireland v England at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin. England's tournament starts there, with Scotland kicking off their campaign the following day, Saturday 6 February, against Italy at Murrayfield (14:10 GMT).

The Six Nations features 15 matches in total, spread across 5 rounds. Each team plays the other five once โ€” five matches per side.

England's five matches in 2027 are:

โ€ข Fri 5 Feb, 20:10 GMT โ€” Ireland v England (Aviva Stadium, Dublin)
โ€ข Sun 14 Feb, 15:10 GMT โ€” England v France (Twickenham, Le Crunch)
โ€ข Sat 20 Feb, 16:40 GMT โ€” England v Italy (Twickenham)
โ€ข Sat 6 Mar, 16:40 GMT โ€” Wales v England (Cardiff)
โ€ข Sat 13 Mar, 16:40 GMT โ€” England v Scotland (Twickenham, Calcutta Cup)

Tickets for England's home matches at Twickenham (v Italy on 20 February and v Scotland on 13 March) are sold by the RFU (Rugby Football Union), typically opening from autumn 2026 โ€” first to members, then on general sale. Sign up via the form at the bottom of the page to be alerted the moment tickets go on general sale.

"Super Saturday" is the final round of the Championship: the three remaining matches are played on the same day, with staggered kick-off times so fans can follow every match. In 2027, Super Saturday falls on Saturday 13 March 2027 with Italy v Wales at 14:10 GMT, England v Scotland at 16:40 GMT and Ireland v France at 20:10 GMT. The Grand Slam or title race often goes right down to the closing minutes of the night fixture.

All kick-off times on this site are shown in UK time (GMT in February, BST from late March). Standard slots are 14:10, 16:40 and 20:10. ITV and the BBC share the UK broadcast rights for the Six Nations, with S4C providing Welsh-language coverage and Virgin Media covering Ireland.

The defending champions will be confirmed after the 2026 Six Nations (February-March 2026). In recent editions, Ireland have been dominant with two Grand Slams (2018, 2023) and several consecutive titles, while France claimed their eleventh title in 2022 with a Grand Slam of their own.
